Never touch your new piercing with unclean hands. Infections can ruin a new piercing!

For the next two weeks wash your piercing 1-2 times a day with a liquid antibacterial soap. First wash your hands thoroughly with soap, then apply a small amount to the finger tips and work to a lather. Apply lather to the piercing and the area around it, and rotating the jewelry through the piercing several times. Let the soap sit on the area for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly. It is best to wash your piercing while in the shower. Wash the piercing as the last thing you do so to wash away all other products that have been used, and it allows for the warm water to run on the piercing to loosen up the tissue before washing.

The piercing may produce a lymph discharge, this will be white or clear and may dry to a crusty formation on the piercing and jewelry. Salt water can be used to take care of it. Mix ¼ teaspoon of salt in a Dixie cup of water (distilled or spring) or premix ½ teaspoon of salt in 8 or 10 oz bottle of water.

Start up jewelry should remain in for two to three months but can be changed by a piercer after two weeks. Only use jewelry made from 316L stainless steel, titanium or niobium. It is very strongly recommend that you only purchase jewelry from a reputable piercing establishment as they will sell quality jewelry.

For the next two weeks after consuming food rinse with an alcohol-free antibacterial mouth wash. After smoking or consuming any beverage other than water, rinse with distilled or bottled water. Swelling can be expected for 24-72 hours. Ice can be used to keep the swelling to a minimum. Ibuprophen can also help to reduce the swelling, especially at bed time(IF COMPATIBLE). It is recommended to have a piercer change the start up jewelry after two weeks, as start up jewelry is oversized to allow for swelling and may become uncomfortable when the swelling recedes. Highly recommend to check your jewelry balls to ensure they are tight(Wash hands first).
